I wanted to gather these characters together for a little modern day reunion. It has been a pleasure to get to know these artists, architects, sculptor and inventors a little better through a more in depth study of their careers and personalities. These men; DiVinci, Raphael and Michelangelo are names that are synonymous with innovation, creativity and the expression of beauty through art for over 500 years. The names to this day inspire awe for what they did and the legacy they left. I think it is important to reflect on the fact that they also owe a debt to those who came before them and that they had the opportunity to learn from. There is a long chain of knowledge and creativity that we today are benefactors of. I think these men and the others of there era were more than fortunate to be alive and active when they were, there was a tremendous confluence of forces that allowed there particular genius to flourish. Another day, another time the result would not have been the same. I was fortunate to find self portraits of these three artists on line it affords us the opportunity through physiognomy to try to gain a better understanding of them, by seeing how they viewed themselves.

  1. Hi Ted,
Thank you for gathering these 3 great artists! You are right to reflect that they were extremely lucky to be alive when they were, and where they were.. in a time when the patronage was fat with money to support these artists and allow them to pursue their greatest potential with all of the resources at their disposal. If they were alive today, I fear that they would not get the opportunity to express themselves in the same way and we would be all the poorer for that.

  2. yes ted, nicely put... I think we so often forget those unnamed individuals that planted the seeds...and it also raises the question of how an era comes to qualify or quantify their notion of "genius."

  3. I really like how you made this blog your own. All three of these artists were innovators and continue to shape todays art and society. Genius is not always appreciated, but what these men created has made a tremendous impact on the world. Through art we can learn from the past. Not just about how they created art, but how they lived, what they thought, and how they felt. Art is just one of the many ways that people are able to break down barriers and break out of stigmas. Because it is a creative form of expression I feel that we get a better insight to the mind workings of great people.
